June 2, 2025, Achham – Saathi conducted a monitoring and capacity-building visit to the Safe House in Achham under the GBVPR II Program, supported by UNFPA. The team, comprising Mr. Santosh Pokharel, Ms. Palita Thapa, Mr. Devendra Basnet, and Mr. Khadga Oli, aimed to assess shelter services, support staff development, and engage local stakeholders for more effective, inclusive service delivery.
Using the Quality Improvement Tool, the team evaluated infrastructure, safety measures, documentation, and psychosocial services. While operations were generally satisfactory, key gaps were identified, including the lack of private spaces, inadequate sanitation facilities, and the absence of disability-friendly infrastructure—particularly concerning for a pregnant, visually impaired survivor currently residing at the shelter.
During informal discussions, beneficiaries expressed satisfaction with the services but highlighted the need for more inclusive support. A coaching session titled “Gender-Based Violence: Attitudes and Perceptions” was delivered to shelter staff, focusing on unconscious bias, trauma-informed care, and survivor-centered approaches. Staff responded positively and committed to integrating these principles into their work.
A Safe House Management Committee meeting, attended by municipal leaders, UNFPA, police, and other stakeholders, addressed coordination gaps and explored options for relocating or upgrading the facility. The committee also agreed to appoint a caretaker for the visually impaired survivor and improve accessibility.
Additionally, Saathi held a session with the Finance Officer to review budget utilization and reporting procedures. Key follow-up actions identified include improving infrastructure, ensuring disability inclusion, enhancing coordination, supporting legal documentation for survivors, and continuing staff capacity building.
Saathi remains committed to strengthening the quality and inclusivity of GBV services in Achham through collaboration, advocacy, and survivor-centered approaches.
