April 30, 2024, Dhangadhi, Sudurpaschim Province – Saathi organized an important orientation session on gender mainstreaming for locally elected leaders in Dhangadhi. More than 40 participants, including Mayors, Deputy Mayors, Ward Chairs, and Ward Members from Shuklaphanta and Krishnapur Municipalities, actively engaged in the discussion.
Bandana Rana, a distinguished member of the UN CEDAW Committee, led the orientation, shedding light on the CEDAW process and its recommendations for UN member states. Rana also delved into specific recommendations relevant to local governments, offering invaluable insights to the attending leaders.
During the session, elected leaders highlighted the necessity for a tailored local strategy to engage men and boys in promoting gender equality, women’s empowerment, and the prevention and response to sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV). Their commitment to addressing gender issues with heightened sensitivity in the upcoming annual plan of the local government was evident.
Saathi’s ongoing initiative, the Generating Ownership Awareness & Liberation (GOAL): From Harmful Gender Stereotypes and SGBV program, supported by AEIN Luxembourg, has been instrumental in this endeavor.
Focused on combating harmful gender stereotypes and violence, this program operates in two ward areas within Shuklaphanta and Krishnapur Municipalities.
The orientation session not only served as a platform for knowledge exchange but also emphasized the importance of incorporating gender-responsive approaches into local governance. It marked a significant step forward in empowering local leaders to champion gender equality and create safer, more inclusive communities.
